Downtown Date Night

This past weekend my 'boyfriend' and I got the opportunity (thanks to the grandparents!) to go out on the town all by ourselves.  And since we love it so much, we chose downtown.  Downtown Tulsa that is.  Having grown up in Tulsa it has been fantastic to see new and exciting businesses, shopping and nightlife emerging there in recent years.
For better or worse we've seen the additions of large scale happenings such as the BOK Center and the new Drillers baseball stadium.  But what I really love about downtown are the smaller places like the restaurants (McNellie's and El Guapo's among others), eateries such as the original Coney Island, the Blue Dome Cafe (best breakfast hands down) and Joe Momma's Pizza (try their Cheeseburger pizza, yum!) and locally owned shops such as Dwelling Spaces.  These are just a few of the places that make the new Downtown Tulsa so fantastic to visit.
It's not just the new I love either.  I love the fabulous old skyscrapers, warehouses and churches.  The architecture is so beautiful and has always been a favorite of mine to photograph.
After dining on cottage pie and chili cheeseburgers at McNellie's, this super-cute guy I know (aka the Husband) drove me around downtown and let me snap random photographs.  Enjoy!

Please excuse the dark photographs (I'm still learning how to do night photography).

Ahhhhh...love this city!

Little Red Dress

One good thing, besides spending a lot of time together as a family, that came from the Oklahoma blizzard and the re-blizzard is all the knitting that took place.  I was able to finish this pretty little number just in time for Valentine's Day.  Every girl needs a pretty little red dress don't you think?

It's knit in the inexpensive yarn by Red Heart called Eco-Cotton.  It's made from 75% recycled cotton (I think from t-shirts).  It's soft and easily washable.  The pattern is a Ravelry download called Kaia babydoll.  Ravelry link

"Sweet!  The Daily Show is on!"

"Oh Jon Stewart...I love you so much!"

"Go away Mom!  I want to watch Jon Stewart in peace!"

"You can come back later when it's over.  Actually, make that after The Colbert Report."

Knitting and Coffee

These are my two current favorite pastimes.  And lucky for me they go together like peas and carrots...like Forrest and Jen-nay...like chocolate and um, chocolate...like alcohol and getting pregnant...wait, just kidding on that one.

So if you're wondering (and I know inquiring minds would like to know) what I've been up to, it's a pretty safe bet that I've been doing one or the other or both at the same time.  Besides a cute little dress I knit for Molly (that's for another post coming up), here are the things that are currently on (and off) the needles:

Not naming any names here, ahem Morgan ahem, but someone wouldn't get out of my shot.

Here are a baby vest and a hat for the hubby in progress (I will post details when complete).

Here is a skinny scarf pour moi that probably has more fashionable value than warmth value.  It's just a simple rib pattern on big needles made from a soft alpaca blend.  Also shown are a little gnome hat for a special kid (more on this later as well) and on the needles is a toddler cardigan for Ms. Plum.  It's the February Baby Sweater on two needles by Elizabeth Zimmermann sized up for a toddler by using an aran weight yarn and size 8 needles.  Ravelry link

Also, I wanted to tell you that I have a new favorite way of brewing coffee.  My french press.

The taste of coffee made with it is far superior to the coffee made from my drip coffee maker.  That is all.
Have a good rest of the day!!!

Hello Monday!

Today I could certainly use some inspiration.  I'm having to take a few deep breaths and realize that sometimes your child just won't take a good nap and MAY just be having a cranky whiny day.  And that's okay.  That's just the way it is.  I still love her and she's still my little Valentine.  And to be fair, she hasn't been whiny the WHOLE day.  And I have EVIDENCE by these pictures I just took:

So I KNOW for at least 4 seconds of today she has not been whiny.  What a goober.

So here are a few things I will be drawing inspiration from this week besides the above pictures of my silly kiddo:

I'm knitting this for an upcoming baby.

Gonna try to do some birdwatching this week.

This skirt is awfully cute.

Hedgehogs!

Meerkats!

Nothing

Have a peaceful week!

Be Mine.

Happy Valentine's Day!

If an aged look is for you...A How-To

I really like to make things look OLD.  Okay, except maybe myself.  In the case of me I use Oil of Olay moisturizer on my face daily.  Because it is supposed to make me look younger and feel refreshed.  And because it smells like my Grams.  But I digress...
So other than myself, I like to give things that rustic, aged, vintage-y look.  And since we are in the midst of this blizzard in Oklahoma, I've been worrying about the birds.  So I bought a couple of bird-feeders, a birdhouse and some seed (along with grapes and blueberries past their date, which they are loving by the way).

So if you like your bird feeders like you like your wine and scotch, then this tutorial is for you!

How to make a new bird feeder look like its seen a winter or two tutorial

First gather your supplies:
-Clear glaze mixing medium (I used Valspar from Lowe's)
-Sponge brush or paintbrush
-Acrylic paint (I used the color Burnt Umber)
-Base paint color (I used a sample can of Martha Stewart Living in Bonsai from Home Depot)
-Bird Feeder (I used a basic cedar one that I bought at a chain store.  I didn't feel like waiting around on the husband to hand make one...I would still be waiting til next year...Love you honeybunny!)
-Jar or cup to mix your glaze in
-Mod Podge or Krylon Clear Coat
I bought a sample jar because I knew it wouldn't take very much paint.

First, remove the glass panes and paint your bird feeder with the base color and let dry.  Repeat if necessary.

Next, mix a small amount of glaze with a small amount of the burnt umber in your mixing jar.  It doesn't take a lot of the Burnt Umber so start tiny and add more until you get the desired amount of color that you're looking for.
Then brush the aging mixture all over your bird feeder.  Be sure to really get it into all the little cracks and crevices.  Try to go with the grain of the wood.  The grain will really stand out once the glaze is dry.  After you are satisfied that your feeder looks properly aged, cover it with a clear coat to seal it.  I used a thick layer of Mod Podge but your could use something like Clear Coat from Krylon.  Replace the glass panes once the clear coat dries.
Position your bird feeder some place pretty to take nice pictures and admire your handiwork.  (Check out Sofia perched, ready to "sneak" up on our bird friends.  Fortunately for the birdies she's strictly indoor).

Then if yours is a hanging feeder like mine, put seed in and hang on an out door hook.  Here my feeder hangs on a temporary hook until this snow clears and I can place a pretty decorative hook on my patio.

Then for heaven's sake get inside where its warm and watch the birdies flock to their new/old feeder!!

Monday fun!

How to make a basic pillow- for those of you looking for a good tutorial on how to make a pillow.  I find the list of measurements helpful.  And nothing jazzes up a room this cheap quite like new pillow covers (unless your dogs notoriously toenail-pick the fabric and shed their fur all over them that is).

As if the cinnamon rolls last week weren't enough, these bacon onion cheddar biscuits are calling my name.

Slow down and really live.- a good quick read that hopefully will inspire you too.

Watching the squirt shake her hiney to Mr. Diamond is priceless.  Plus, Cherry can easily be subbed by Molly.

I'm busy knitting away for others right now but I'm thinking of making this hat for myself.

Pretty sure this is the cutest knitted toy I've ever seen.

About to finish this book soon.  Loved this series!

Who wants to buy me this wittle guy?  Anyone?  Anyone?...(crickets...)

Enjoy your week!!!

A Tuesday list...on Wednesday

The following list is brought to you by EXTREME weather conditions aka The Oklahoma Blizzard 2011...

Here in no particular order are SOME of the things we've been shoving into our mouths and thereby shoving onto our backsides over the past few days:

1.  Cinnamon Rolls

2.  Pasta alla Marlboro Man.  My husband says this is one of the best things I've ever made.  Aw, shucks.  Thanks Pioneer Woman!

3.  Banana Oatmeal Bread.  This is becoming a staple at my house considering my tendency of letting bananas over-ripen.

4.  Because not everything HAS to be from scratch:
5.  These were SUPPOSED to be for the husband's b-day party last weekend but somehow, to my backsides dismay, they were forgotten about:

6.  And what I'm thinking about making for dinner (They look very heart healthy don't you think?):
Pan-fried pork chops

Now, to go eat some more...Be back later with another post!

This weather makes me...sleepy.

I'm soooo behind on posting.  Like, two whole days.  But this blizzard stuff makes me, well, sleepy.  And lazy.  So, back to posting tomorrow.  We will catch up then!

Besides, someone's been in my spot.
