Vintage Finds

It was a beautiful day last Thursday and I was stricken with spring fever.  Unfortunately I wasn't quite set up yet to start a little gardening.  Sooooo I ventured out to Claremore for some antiquing.  And some local fresh dairy products (more on that later!)

I found lots of things I loved but here is what I came home with:

Perhaps my favorite item was this set of 4 mugs for $6.  I think they will become my new favorite coffee cups.

Next up was an array of cool vintage cookbooks.  I was in need of a book on canning and preserving for this coming season's bounty of fresh veggies and berries.  I also bought a book on preparing lamb so I will be able to tap into my great local source at Shepherd's Cross.
Also, I have plans of acquiring a pressure cooker for both canning and meal preparation.  Luckily, I came across a book that will help me out there as well.

And lastly, I found this gorgeous Scandinavian (I think) sign...

The ONLY problem with it is that I launch into a rendition of "Wilkommen" from Cabaret every time I look at it.

Which I guess is only a problem if you are around to hear me.

Some simple pants from Daddy's shirt

I've had some men's shirts hanging out in the fabric bin waiting to be used for a while.  Jeremy gave these to me to cut up and reuse.
I'm in the midst of a flurry of sewing for the kiddo and others for spring and summer.  I'm going to try to make her several pairs of pants and skirts.  This was my first pair for this season.  With prices of just about EVERYTHING rising, why not reuse some things that might not fit anymore?  Plus, you will be consuming less.  Which will make you feel better about yourself.

So here's what I did...

First I cut out the larger bits of fabric in between the seams.  (Side note:  remove and save your buttons too for something else later!)   I'll probably use mine in future knitting projects.

Then I pinned my pattern to the parts of fabric I wanted to use.  I'm using the "Huck Finn Pants" from Heather Ross's Weekend Sewing.  They are meant to be highwaters/capri's which I thought would be great for the outdoors and gardening.  Right now she just looks a bit Erkelish in them but still cute.  In a 'nerdy chic' kind of way.

Here I "strategically" placed the pattern over the already existing pocket so I don't have to sew one on later.  I'm so s-m-a-r-t.

And, oh, what's this?  Some cute britches on a half-dressed girl?

See?  Nerdy chic.
Turns out they are great for climbing...

playing...
and lounging...

and perhaps more lounging whilst ignoring Mama with the camera...

I see a lot of ignoring Mama with the camera in her future...

Gypsyfied

I believe I've said it before but I'll say it again...I like the Gypsy flava.  Today's post will be short and sweet (since nap time is almost over for SOMEBODY).

First up I'd like any of you to consider buying this for me for my birthday.  (It's 7/17 if you don't already know).  I mean, I can't really afford an $80 price tag, but maybe YOU'RE rich or just feeling generous...or you just really really like me a LOT.  It's pretty stinkin' cute NO?  And since the husband won't consider letting me have the real thing, I think it's only fair right?

I'm pretty for certain I would wear the heck outta this ring.

Or perhaps this butterfly necklace.

Also, wouldn't the kiddo look awfully cute in these?  I think so.

And speaking of the kiddo wearing something adorable, take a look at what I made for her yesterday:

It's from this book:

Just tie a scarf on her head, throw a few gold chains and some big hoop earrings on her and she'll be telling your fortune in no time.

Perspective

One night last week I was having a big ol' pity party.  Complete with crying, whining and a few "Oh whoa as me's".  I might have even sang "Swing Low Sweet Chariot".

The reason for all the bawling and squawling is not important but what stopped it is.

Amidst all my feeling sorry for myself a sweet little girl was having a birthday.

Earlier in the evening I had stopped by her house and given her her gifts.  I had made her some sweet, simple skirts.  I didn't get a chance to watch her open them because I was running late for previously planned engagement.

Well, later on with puffy eyes I was scrolling through Facebook.  And there I came across something that made me smile a really big smile.  The little girl's mom had posted pictures of the skirts I made her and had stated how much the girl loved them.  She described how her girl was dancing around the living room in one of her skirts.

Well, well, well...nothing like a cute little kid to put things into perspective and snap me out of it.

Instant happy.

Thank you for that.

Here are few shots of the skirts and here's a link to tell you how to make your own if you like.  It's the Oliver+S Lazy Days Skirt pattern.

Don't Cha Wish Your Daddy Could Paint Like Mine...

Don't cha!  (For this blog title to work it much be sung.  Out loud.)

Look at this beauty:

Every girl should have their own personal artist at their beck and call.  It's even better when they are family and will do it for free.  I know I've raved about my father's painting abilities before but I'm gonna do it again.

A while back I got to hinting that I wanted this pretty European countryside painting.  Well, he wouldn't give it to me because it was the first painting he ever did.  And before you think "Sheesh, how rude denying your lovely deserving spectacular first-born daughter such a pretty little painting", he did me one better (as he puts it).  The painting above is actually a re-do of the one I had been admiring but done with more experience under his belt.  It turned out so pretty.  He even had it framed for me with a frame that his art teacher's husband made from repurposed wood.  I think its lovely and I'm looking for the perfect spot in my house to hang it.

Look, even one of our cats Morgan loves it too:

(It could be that he just likes scratching his face on the wood but I like to believe the former.)

Also, I haven't shown off this other one he gave me some time back.  It looks so pretty above our fireplace and against our newly painted turquoise wall.

It makes me long for our own red barn in the country someday.

Short on time...

Since I have been planning and primping for my girl's night out tonight to see none other than Oklahoma's own Pioneer Woman I don't find myself with much time to do a proper post today.  However, since I am now one of THOSE proud parents I am showing you a bunch of cute pictures of my kiddo...

BABY BELLY!!!
On the move.
Dirty house, cute outfit.
You gotta LOVE Emma's (Molly's cuz) in this picture.
LOVE LOVE LOVE HER.

The Alaska Hat

For those of you who don't already know the story of how Jeremy and I met I will give you a brief summarized version.  We met through mutual friends.  He was an enlisted man in the Air Force home on leave.  We briefly met one night at a get together.  He seemed fun and nice but he was gone the next day.  He was also hung up on somebody else at the time.

Then life moved on a year went by and he was home on leave again.  This time for a couple of weeks instead of a short weekend.  I was casually dating a mutual friend but he and I became friends despite the distraction.  Looking back I was paying him more attention than the other guy.

Here was a nice looking guy who was funny, had manners and was adored by his friends (my friends who I trusted).  Problem was, he was stationed in Alaska.  From my little corner of Oklahoma that's a long way away.  Google maps puts it at 3,633 miles to be exact.  In my mind I think I was thinking "Well, that would never work."  Besides, I was dating that other guy.

Well, we became friends over those few weeks he was here but then came the day that he had to fly back to Alaska.  I realized then that I really didn't want my new friend to go.  I looked up to the sky that evening thinking about him on his flight and how he must feel lonely.

As fate would have it, the other guy decided that same weekend that he just wanted to be friends.  I remember talking with my best girlfriend and she said, "I think you should give Chia (my husband's nickname) another look".  And thank goodness, I took her advice.  I figured it was probably a stupid idea though considering he had just left but I emailed him anyway.  I told him that I enjoyed getting to know him and that I would like to keep in touch.  Then a few emails in, I confessed that I kinda liked him.  Turns out he kinda liked me too.

Then came the phone calls.  Many, many phone calls.  Daily in fact.  We talked for hours and hours well into the wee hours of the morning.  I talked so long on my cell phone that my ears burned and my battery died all the time.  We fell for each other over the phone.  We professed our love for each other the first time over the phone.  I am very grateful for the invention of the phone but I blame having to communicate all that time by those means for my dislike to this day of talking on the phone.

Over the next year, I visited him twice in Alaska and he came here once.  It was always so painful to have to leave each other.  I will spare you all the stories of my nervous breakdowns (and his) and all the crying and lamenting and just skip to the end.  He eventually separated from the military and came home.  A year after that we were married.  Three years after that I had his baby.  A beautiful baby girl who STILL looks just like him (with my nose thrown in the mix).

Now to get to the point of my telling you this story.  (I have been told I have a problem getting to the point).  I wonder WHO tells me that all the time.  Anywhoooo, on one of those trips up to Alaska we visited a local yarn shop at my request.  I like to collect yarns and wines made locally in the places where I travel.  Since I imagine the growing of grapes is probably unheard of in the really-freakin'-cold interior of Alaska, I looked for yarn made there.  I found some.  I decided I would make something for my beloved from this yarn.

Well, seven years, 2 dogs, 3 cats, two houses, and one baby later I have FINALLY gotten around to making something for him.  I even threw in some of my very 1st handspun I learned to spin last summer to make it extra special.  I call it "The Alaska Hat".  Apparently, he loves it.  I asked him the other night why he was wearing it to bed.  He said, "It brings me comfort."

I like that.

The pattern for the hat comes from this book.  It's the "Fisherman's Watch Cap".

Happy March!

Since I'm behind on posting I'm combining Monday and Tuesday together.  Let's hear it for togetherness!

A List of Inspiration:

-Shadow play!

-Playground time!

...Plenty of just lying around in our pajamas

...and more lying around ("Hey tubby tubby!")

and perhaps some time spent looking out the window.

Other things I am loving right now:

-Oh pretty sweater, how I would like to knit you for myself.

-Pretty much everything from here looks cool.

-I may have to eventually delve into some colorwork and make one of these.

-Stuff made with chicken wire.

-More stuff made with chicken wire.

-aaaaaand perhaps some pretty chicken wire trim?  (maybe I'm going a bit overboard here).

Well I guess I'll go make something with...

...chicken wire.  Um, yeah.
